Safety is also about how we work together
Today, April 28, World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed, a global initiative by the ILO that highlights safe and healthy working environments.
Safety is not only about what we do—but how we do it together.
Watch Fredrik Kringberg, HSEQ Manager at Jernbro, share his thoughts on safety, the work environment and how we treat one another in the video below.
More than machines, equipment and routines
When we talk about safety in industry, many people think of machines, protective equipment and routines. However, safety is also about our approach to risks, to the work and to one another.
It is about thinking ahead, understanding what is acceptable and what is not, and creating the conditions to do the right thing. However, it is also about how we collaborate, communicate and treat one another in day-to-day work.
Safe workplaces are shaped not only by physical protective measures, but also by how people function together.
A safe workplace is built between people
Safe workplaces are not only about having the right equipment and clear routines. They are also shaped by how we collaborate in everyday life.
When work is clear, when the workload is reasonable and when people feel supported by their colleagues, it becomes easier to stay focused, make good decisions and act safely. How we speak to one another, how we provide feedback and how we treat one another therefore affects the work environment more than one sometimes realises.
Feeling job satisfaction, being treated with respect and being able to contribute to good day-to-day interaction are important parts of a safe and sustainable work environment.
Caring is also part of safety
At Jernbro, we build safety together. This applies both to how we plan and carry out the work, and to how we act towards one another.
Being a good colleague means being attentive, showing respect and helping to create the right conditions for others to succeed in their work. It can be as simple as asking a question, giving praise for something that works well, or addressing something before it becomes a problem.
Sometimes it is also about being able to rethink, adjust and apologise. That is also part of a healthy work environment.
THREE SIMPLE BEHAVIOURS to take with you
Fredrik Kringberg highlights three simple behaviours that make a difference in everyday life:
- Say hello to those you meet during your shift
- Acknowledge a job well done
- Ask questions and engage positively in your colleagues’ work
It does not need to be more complicated than that. Small actions contribute to a workplace where more people feel seen, respected and safe.
Safety—every day
World Day for Safety and Health at Work is an important reminder that safety is not only about rules, equipment and processes.
It is also about how we are at work. How we collaborate. How we communicate. How we help one another to do the right thing.
At Jernbro, we build safety every day—through what we do, and through how we do it together.
