Øresundsbron – Safe, reliable operation assured

Since 2022, Jernbro has been providing maintenance services and projects for Øresundsbron. The operation of the bridge is complex, combining motorway and railway, mostly over water and partly under water. This places high demands on safety, environment, planning and quality.

Challenge

The operation of Øresundsbron involves balancing uninterrupted traffic with the need for continuous inspections and maintenance. The bridge’s critical components are exposed to weather, heavy usage, and marine environments, which means they must be maintained to the highest standards.

In addition, the work often has to be carried out in difficult-to-access areas and under strict safety routines. The customer also places strong emphasis on sustainability, requiring both climate-conscious transport solutions and efficient methods that minimize environmental impact.

− Jernbro optimizes maintenance rounds so the work can be carried out quickly, correctly, and cost-effectively. Each round indicates where to go, when, and which activity to perform, says Pekka Öhrstedt, Head of Maintenance Agreement for Steel and Concrete, Øresundsbro Konsortiet.

Solution

Jernbro has taken on the responsibility for planned maintenance of the bridge’s critical parts. The team carefully schedules and executes maintenance rounds with precision to ensure reliability and minimize traffic disruptions.

Modern technology supports the work, with tools such as QR-coded inventories, cameras, and robot- or 3D-based inspections that enable checks even in hard-to-reach places without exposing staff to unnecessary risks.

The team documents all tasks and ensures quality through the maintenance system, which also manages work orders, risk analyses, and road closures.

In line with Øresundsbron’s sustainability requirements, Jernbro uses electric vehicles whenever possible and HVO diesel when electric transport is not feasible.

Results

Through systematic and well-planned work, Jernbro helps ensure that Øresundsbron remains safe, reliable, and functional with minimal disruptions for traffic.

Early detection of wear and potential issues enables timely action and reduces the risk of costly repairs. Modern inspection technologies improve both efficiency and safety, while sustainable transport and work methods lower the climate impact.

The cooperation has also strengthened trust. It has created a solid foundation for a long-term partnership with shared goals.

− Our goal is for the facility to last 200 years, which means future generations should understand what, when, and why we have done things. This makes us a unique client regarding our processes, working methods, and reportss. Jernbro has quickly found a way to adapt their delivery to our requirements, says Pekka Öhrstedt.
