Challenge
The Swedish Maritime Administration’s five icebreakers in Luleå play a crucial role in keeping shipping lanes open during the winter. Heavy wear constantly affects their piping systems, so the crew and Jernbro perform regular maintenance to maintain operational reliability and onboard safety.
The challenge comes from executing complex pipe work in confined spaces. The team must complete all work within a tight schedule, as major maintenance can only take place between May and December.
Solution
For many years, Jernbro has supported the Swedish Maritime Administration with the manufacturing, repair and installation of piping systems on the icebreakers. The work covers everything from hot water, fuel, sewage and fire pipes to more extensive renovations, modifications and steel works.
Much of the work is carried out directly onboard, with pipes built on site. In addition to pipe replacements, Jernbro has repaired hot water boilers and rebuilt ballast tanks. The team has also installed platforms and renovated lifting equipment. Additionally, they have modified slewing cranes in the Maritime Administration’s workshop.
