LKAB relies on Jernbro’s expertise during critical maintenance stop
At LKAB’s annual maintenance stop in Svappavara, Jernbro was entrusted with additional assignments under tight deadlines. By combining certified welding expertise and cross-site collaboration, Jernbro delivered safe pillar reinforcements, new spill pockets, and essential maintenance and all before the stop ended.
Challenge
During the annual maintenance stop in Svappavara, LKAB needed additional work completed under time pressure. This included manufacturing and installing spill pockets and reinforcing load-bearing pillars to ensure plant safety.
− During the stop, we were asked if we could take on some pillar reinforcements. Since we have people with both the right welding training and certificates regarding load-bearing structures, we were able to do so, says Jonny Henriksson, Group Manager at Jernbro in Kiruna.
Solution
Jernbro mobilized expertise from multiple facilities. The Kiruna team cut and welded beams for pillar reinforcement, while Avesta manufactured and assembled four new spill pockets. In addition, Jernbro carried out regular maintenance such as filter replacement, ventilation duct repairs, and gutter replacement.
− The fact that employees from different locations do the work together is one of Jernbro’s strengths. When customers need expertise from different facilities, we can offer a sharp work group, Jonny continues.
Results
All projects were completed before the maintenance stop ended. The reinforcement secured safe operations, the new spill pockets improved efficiency, and the cooperation across Jernbro sites ensured the right skills were available.
− This was the largest work effort we’ve had during a stop in Svappavara due to the extra jobs. Both the pillar reinforcement and the spill pocket installations were appreciated, especially since they were delivered under time pressure, says Jonny.
The successful delivery strengthened Jernbro’s long-term collaboration with LKAB, supported by certified welding expertise and a renewed framework agreement.
