Lantmännen improves production and safety through proactive maintenance
Lantmännen’s partnership with Jernbro has transformed maintenance work across its feed factories. By shifting from urgent repairs to structured preventive maintenance, Lantmännen has increased availability, improved safety, and created a calmer, more efficient working environment.
Challenge
In 2016, Lantmännen wanted to improve reliability at its feed factories by reducing urgent maintenance and increasing preventive work. The goal was to create a structured and digitalized way of working with common KPIs, lower costs, and extended equipment lifetime.
– We are good at handling grain and producing animal feed, while Jernbro is a pro at maintenance. They also felt like a natural partner given their local presence, says Peder Karlsson, Production Manager Foder at Lantmännen.
Solution
Lantmännen signed a framework agreement with Jernbro covering around 20 facilities. Together they introduced uniform processes for preventive and remedial maintenance, improvement work, and digital reporting via the Jernbro Performance Portal.
Jernbro’s staff carry out ongoing preventive maintenance on-site, supported by data from more than 120,000 registered service orders. Regular project meetings, shared safety work, and continuous improvement initiatives further strengthened the collaboration.
– By working proactively and long-term, we can make wise decisions together. We also have common KPIs and working methods across all sites, explains Jenny Brodén, Contract Manager at Jernbro.
Results
The shift from urgent to preventive maintenance has led to higher availability, reduced stress, and increased production capacity without major investments. At the Lidköping plant, acute maintenance dropped from 27% in 2018 to 11% in 2023, while preventive maintenance increased from 29% to 41%.
The collaboration has also improved safety, reducing accidents through systematic risk management. Both parties highlight the strong partnership as a key success factor.
– There is a completely different atmosphere today compared to four years ago. Operators work calmly and systematically, and we deliver the volumes that customers demand, says Peder Karlsson.
