Experience with longer underground pipeline runs
Over the years, Jernbro has built solid experience in establishing longer underground pipelines for various media.
For Veidekke, we established a 910-metre extension of a natural gas pipeline and carried out two separate 800-metre petrol and diesel pipelines. In addition, we have installed several kilometres of piping internally at power plants—in complex environments with confined space conditions and strict safety requirements.
Challenge
Long underground pipeline runs require consistent weld quality over distance, control of logistics, and documentation that meets regulatory requirements.
When we also work inside active power plants, challenges are added such as limited access, coordination with operations, and working close to existing, hot lines.
The challenge is to deliver the same high quality—whether in open ground or inside a densely packed plant.
Solution
We ensured quality and documentation across all pipeline runs:
• A fixed welding procedure ensured reproducible quality on all joints
• Ongoing NDT inspection of welds before laying
• Petrol/diesel (800 m): focus on tightness and corrosion protection
• Natural gas (910 m): carried out in accordance with gas pipeline standards
• Pressure testing of all runs before final backfilling
Results
• 2 x 800 metres petrol and diesel pipelines
• 1 x 910 metres natural gas extension for Veidekke
• Several kilometres of pipe installations inside Danish power plants—carried out under complex conditions with full technical documentation, even where photos have not been possible.
Overall, Jernbro has experience with underground pipeline runs close to 1 km and several kilometres in hard-to-access industrial environments.
