Avesta Hydropower Plant − ready to meet future energy demands
To meet society’s growing demand for renewable energy, hydropower plants must remain efficient, reliable, and safe far into the future. At Avesta Lillfors Hydropower Plant, owned by Fortum, this meant a complete modernization of the electrical and control systems. Together with AFRY, Jernbro played a key role in ensuring that the plant is now future-proofed for at least the next 20 years.
Challenge
Avesta Lillfors Hydropower Plant, built in 1981, had reached the end of its technical lifespan for critical equipment. The team needed to replace the electrical and control systems to ensure continued safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly electricity production. The challenge was to carry out a large-scale upgrade without compromising safety and while keeping downtime to a minimum.
− The implementation and cooperation with Jernbro has been carried out in a good and safe way, says Peder Eklund, Project Manager at Fortum.
Solution
Fortum commissioned AFRY to lead the modernization project, with Jernbro as a key partner for dismantling old systems and installing new ones.
The work started with replacing outdated fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LEDs, followed by the major task of upgrading the plant’s electrical and control systems.
During the shutdown, Jernbro completed an intensive effort. The team removed old equipment and installed new switchgear and transformers. They also connected thousands of cables throughout the plant.
Erik Dahlén, Construction Manager at AFRY:
− Jernbro has been an important partner in planning and implementing the project on site. The work has been challenging and many complex difficulties have been solved together under constant time pressure. Jernbro has contributed its expertise in assembly and installation in a very convincing way.
Results
The modernization has secured Avesta Lillfors Hydropower Plant’s operation for the next 20 years. The plant now has upgraded control systems, new switchgear, and energy-efficient lighting.
As a result, it is safer, more reliable, and less prone to failures. The annual output of 125 GWh is enough to supply around 6,200 homes. Key results include the removal of 2.8 tons of old cabling and the installation of 600 new cables totaling 9,000 meters. In addition, 2,900 new cable connections were made. The project also improved staff safety and reduced energy consumption.
