Viscaria restarts its copper mine with Jernbro as partner

When mining company Viscaria set out to reopen its copper mine outside Kiruna, extensive installations were needed to pump out and purify the water that had filled the mine during its years of downtime. Jernbro was entrusted with responsibility for the piping and mechanical contracting in the new water treatment plant. The assignment is technically demanding and plays a crucial role in the future of mining operations in the region.

Challenge

The Viscaria project is both complex and large-scale, covering an area that stretches over four kilometers and 300 meters underground. Before production can restart, the mine must first be drained of water, which is then directed to a newly built treatment facility before being released into the surrounding environment.

Jernbro’s role includes installing the piping systems, filtration tanks, bridges, pumps, and other mechanical equipment in the plant. The work requires close coordination with multiple contractors on a confined site where access is often limited.

It’s an exciting and fast-paced project with many parallel activities that demand careful planning. Keeping pace with the other contractors is key to ensuring smooth progress, says Tommy Nyström, Project Manager at Jernbro.

Solution

Jernbro carries out prefabrication, assembly and installation on an ongoing basis. In-house workshops manufacture pipes, bridges, pipe supports and steel components and employees engaged in management, welding and fabrication.

There’s a great spirit across the site, even though the workload is high. We work closely with the client and other contractors and the cooperation is running very smoothly, says Tommy.

Viscaria chose Jernbro for its local expertise, in-house production capabilities, real-time progress reporting and transparent communication and all of which contribute to a secure and efficient delivery.

We needed a contractor with local resources and experience from similar projects. Jernbro had both the right competence and the ability to coordinate installations effectively, says Peter Tornéus, Chief Project Manager at Viscaria.

Results

The work at the water treatment plant has progressed according to plan. Once operational, the system will enable Viscaria to start pumping water out of the mine, a vital step toward restarting copper production.

For Jernbro, the project marks not only an important customer partnership but also an opportunity for continued growth and learning.

– This is our first project with Viscaria and we see great potential for future collaboration. The experience has allowed both our company and our employees to grow and develop, says Erik Kangas, Team Manager at Jernbro.
