Gränges turns to Jernbro for emergency axle repair
When a critical reel shaft suddenly broke in two, Gränges relied on Jernbro’s expertise to minimize downtime and secure a fast, high-quality repair.
Challenge
Gränges suffered a sudden axle breakdown that risked long downtime. The reel shaft, four meters long, had broken in two pieces. A standard renovation would normally take 4–5 weeks.
− Since Jernbro was already supporting us with mechanics and construction, and is located nearby, it was natural to ask them for help with this emergency, says Tomas Palmqvist, Maintenance Manager at Gränges.
Solution
Jernbro mobilized its construction department in Finspång and the machine workshop in Avesta to handle the entire renovation. The team spliced the shaft using advanced drilling, heating, and cooling techniques, followed by precision machining and constant measuring to secure perfect tolerances.
− We convinced Gränges that we could manage the renovation from start to finish by combining expertise from different sites, says Martin Andersson, Regional Manager at Jernbro.
Results
Jernbro completed the emergency repair in just 1.5 weeks, cutting three weeks off the normal schedule. The team restored the shaft to look and perform like new, which enabled Gränges to restart production quickly.
